Elimination Flashcards
What is micturition?
The release of urine from the bladder into the urethra so that it can be eliminated or pass urine
What muscle is the bladder wall made up of?
Smooth muscle
Where is the spinal micturition centre (SMC) located?
Spinal cord
Where is the pontine micturition centre (PMC) located?
The brain stem
What are the functions of the pelvic floor?
Produces support for the contents of the abdominal cavity and contributes to the maintaining continence by supporting closure of the urethra and anus
Urinary continence is dependent on?
Relaxation of the bladder and restrain of bladder contractions during filling
Mucosal cells lining the urethra are maintained by?
Oestrogen
Changes in the levels of oestrogen can be responsible for incontinence when?
Menstrual cycle, pregnancy and menopause
The Colon exhibits slow waves of peristalsis that gently moves what along the length of the bowel?
Faeces
What’s the sequence of events in normal defecation?
Colon > rectum > anal sphincter relaxes > contraction of abdominal muscles > stool expelled by muscles
Faecal continence in maintained by?
Pelvic floor muscles, anal cushions, nervous control, healthy rectum and integrity of anal sphincters
Maintaining urinalysis continence depends on?
Urethral pressure exceeding bladder pressure
What enhances the main tense of faecal continence?
Semi solid consistency of faeces
