STI's/STD's Flashcards
Chlamydia
common sexually transmitted infection caused by bacteria. Many people do not have any S&S’s
S&S’s of chlamydia
early stages show few signs and symptoms. Signs and symptoms usually develop within 1-2 weeks after exposure to chlamydia. Even when signs and symptoms occur they are often mild and passing (making them easy to overlook).
1) painful urination
2) lower abdominal pain
3) vaginal discharge
4) painful sexual intercourse in women
5) bleeding between periods and after sex in women
6) testicular pain in men
Can also infect the rectum or eye infection (conjunctivitis)
Prevention for chlamydia
use condoms, limit your # of sex partners, get reg. screenings, avoid douching
Gonorrhea
infection caused by sexually transmitted bacterium that infects both males and females. Most often affects the urethra, rectum or throat. In females, it can also infect the cervix. Most commonly spread during vaginal, oral, or anal sex. Babies of infected moms can be infected during childbirth. In babies, the eyes are affected.
S&S’s of gonorrhea
In many cases, it causes no symptoms. Symptoms can affects many sites in your body, but commonly appear in the genital tract.
Men: painful urination, pus-like discharge from the tip of the penis, pain/swelling in on testicle
Women: increased vaginal discharge, painful urination, vaginal bleeding b/w periods, abdominal or pelvic pain
Other sites gonorrhea affects
rectum, eyes, throats, joints
Syphilis
bacterial infection usually spread by sexual contact. Disease starts as a painless sore - typically on your genitals, rectum or mouth. Spreads from person to person via skin or mucous membrane contact with these sores
Tx of syphilis
IM penicillin. Without TX it can result in severely damage your heart, brain or other organs and can be life threatening
Primary syphilis
first sign is a small sore (chancre). Appears at the spot where the bacteria entered your body. Usually develops about 3 weeks after exposure. Chancre will heal within 3-6 weeks
Secondary syphilis
a rash that begins on your trunk but eventually covers your entire body, even the palms of hands and soles of feet. Rash is usually not itchy and may be be accompanied by wart like sores in your mouth or genital area. Some people also experience hair loss, muscle aches, fever, sore throat and swollen lymph nodes
Signs and symptoms for secondary syphilis
may disappear within a few weeks or repeatedly come and go for as long as a year
Latent syphilis
If left untreated, then disease moves to the hidden stage, when you have no symptoms. Can last for years. S&S may never return, or disease may progress to the tertiary stage
Tertiary syphilis
15-30% of people infected who don’t get tx will develop complications. In the late stage, the disease may damage your brain, nerves, eyes heart, blood vessels, liver, bones, and joints. May occur man-years after the original, untreated infection
Neurosyphilis
at any stage can spread and, among other damage, cause damage to the brain and nervous system and the eye
Congenital syphilis
babies born to women who have it can become infected through placenta or during birth. Most newborns with it have no symptoms, although some experience a rash on the palms of their hands and the soles of their feet
