Tonic-clonic

A

Also known as grand mal. Usually begin on both sides of the brain but can start in one side and spread to the whole brain. A person loses consciousness, muscle stiffen, and jerking movements are seen

Absence

A

Cause you to blank out or stare into space for a few seconds. Most common in children and don’t typically cause any long-term problems. These types are often set off by a period of hyperventilation.

Psychomotor

A

Older term used to describe a complex partial seizure which is seen in it’s most common forms as either psychomotor or temporal lobe epilepsy. More complex seizures than simple partial seizures b/c alteration of awareness typically accompanies the experience of a seizure. Pt’s may act out in a variety of ways while experiencing the seizure but not have recall of it. Strange repetitious movements called automatisms. Usually lasts 3 mins.

Jacksonian

A

Type of focal partial seizure. The seizure is caused by unusual electrical activity that affects only a small area of the brain. Person maintains awareness during the seizure. Tingling or twitching begins in a small area and then marches or spreads to a larger area of the body

Myoclonic

A

brief shock-like jerks of a muscle or group of muscles. They occur in a variety of epilepsy syndromes that have different characteristics. The person is usually awake and able to think clearly

Akinetic

A

a type that consists of partial or complete loss of muscle tone that is caused by temporary alteration in brain function. Usually brief - lasting 15 minutes
