Clozapine (Clozaril)
a medication used to treat mood disorders such as schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder. A last resort medication.
Clozapine uses
Used to treat positive symptoms, mood, and lowers risk of suicide
Side effects of Clozapine
less chance of developing EPS but high chance of agranulocytosis.
Labs to monitor
WBC, ANC. Monitor weekly for the first six months, bi-weekly for the 6 months remaining, and then monthly for the following
Lithium
a medication used to treat mood disorders. (mood stabilizer)
Ranges for lithium
1-1.5 (acute manic phase)
- 6-1.2 (long term maintenance)
- 4-0.6 elderly
Lithium toxicity ranges for mild-moderate
1.5-2

Most severe adverse reaction to Lithium
cardiac dysrhythmias
Prior to lithium which levels do you need to obtain
renal, cardiac, and thyroid function
Where is lithium excreted
kidneys and the liver does not play a role
Antiparkinsonian agents
levodopa carbidopa (dopamine agonist), MAOI (seligence), COMT inhibitors (entacapome), Benzotropine (cogentin), antiviral (amantadine), bendaryl (anthistamine)
Anitdepressant education
- avoid alcohol use an illicit substances as they can interact with meds
- if you miss a dose, don’t double up on next does
- don’t suddenly stop drugs b/c you may experience withdrawal symptoms
- avoid alertness activities at first
- check with prescriber before taking any OTC meds
- be alert for signs of depression and suicide
- keep appointments for follow-up care and lab testing that’s scheduled
- be aware of support groups
- take meds exactly as prescribed
