1) Trust vs. Mistrust (hope)
Age: 0-1.5
A period during which the infant learns to trust the world around him/her or becomes cynical about the social environments ability to meet their needs (ex. infant crying for basic needs)
What happens with mistrust?
anxiety and increased insecurities
2) Autonomy vs. Shame (will)
Age: 1.5-3
Focuses on the toddler’s new mobility and the accompany desire for autonomy. (ex. dress himself/herself)
What happens with shame?
feel inadequate in their ability to survive and may become overly dependant upon others; lack of self-esteem and feel a sense of shame and doubt in their lives
3) Initiative vs. guilt (purpose)
Age: 3-5
Child begins to assert their power and control over the world through directing play and other social interaction. (Ex. “look mom I poured my own juice)
What happens with guilt?
overstep the mark in his/her forcefulness = parents punish and restrict their initiatives too much
4) Industry vs. Inferiority (competency)
Age: 5-12
Children develop a sense of their own competence through mastery or culturally defined learning tasks
What happens with inferiority?
if they feel like society is demanding then the may feel like a failure (ex. feeling of failure when they don’t understand their school work)
5) Identity vs. Role confusion (fidelity)
Age: 12-18”central crisis” during which adolescents attain a sense of who they are
What happens with role confusion?
not sure of themselves and their place in society (ex. who am I?)
6) Intimacy vs. Isolation (love)
Age: 18-40
An individual must find a life partner/supportive friends in order to avoid social isolation “I’m so loved”
What happens with isolation?
can lead to social isolation, loneliness, and sometimes depression “I’m so lonely ill probably die”
7) Generativity vs. Stagnation (Care)
Age: 40-65
A sense that one is making a valuable contribution to society by bringing up children. You feel accomplished. Stagnation = being self-centred and uninvolved in the world
What happens with stagnation?
feels unproductive, disconnected, and uninvolved
8) Ego integrity vs. despair (wisdom)
Age: 65+
Older adults must achieve a sense of satisfaction with their lives. Ego integrity = completeness “I have accomplished all I have wanted to do in life”.
