Stereotypes Flashcards
Stereotype
Incomplete and overgeneralized beliefs regarding members of a particular group. Often come with prejudice: Hostile/negative feelings about people based on their membership in a certain group.
Stereotype content model
Two dimensions:
- Competence (active/passive)
- Warmth (facilitation/harm)
Warmth low:
- Low comp: contempt low status, competitive, anger
- High comp: Envious prejudice, high status
Warmth high:
- Low comp; Pity, low status.
- High comp: Admiration, high status, pride
Confirmation bias
Interpretation of environment in line with own beliefs. Looking for things that prove your beliefs
Contrast effect
Perceiving stimuli that differ from expectation as being even more different then they are (must be outlier, weird case)
Fundamental attribution error
Negative externally attributed for yourself, but internally attributed to another
Consequences of stereotyping
Negative self-evaluations (of self and of what they think others think of them)
Self-fulfilling prophecy (seek/interpret/create information that verifies own beliefs)
Stereotype threat
- Activating stereotype has effect; results in confirming that stereotype
