Burnout Flashcards
Risk factors: Demands
High performance standards
More frequent training and competition
Greater pressure (internal & external)
Pushing physical and mental limits
Younger stars
Greater extrinsic rewards
Overtraining
Imbalance between training and recovery. often combined w stressors
Can lead to performance decrements lasting 2-3 months (very individual based)
Overreaching
Natural process, overtraining makes you fatigue, once you fully recover you’ll be stronger; supercompensation principle.
Burnout
Multidimensional, cognitive-affective syndrome of exhaustion, reduced sense of accomplishment and sportdevaluation
Related terms
Staleness: failure of the body to adapt to training (temporary plateau, also precursor to burnout)
Overtraining: Beyond level ideal for maximum benefit
Overreaching: short term overtraining, part of normal training. Functional if sufficient recoverytime.
Three dimensions
Emotional exhaustion: Feeling worn-out, drained
Devaluation/depersonalisation: Loss of interest, resentment
Reduced accomplishment: achieving below expectations, not meeting personal targets.
