Arousal Flashcards
1
Q
Arousal
A
psychophysiological activation of the body. Varies from sleepy to excited
2
Q
General rule
A
If you move from low to high arousal, the attention becomes more narrow. = attentional narrowing
This narrowing gates out irrelevant, but eventually also relevant stimuli.
3
Q
Cue utilization theory
A
At low levels of arousal;
- Both relevant and irrelevant stimuli can come into athletes awareness
- Athlete may not be able to concentrate very well at this level
At moderate level
- Athlete experiences more forcus
- Attention narrowing causes athlete to exclude task-irrelevant cues
at (too) high level
- Athlete might miss task-relevant cues
