Disordered eating in athletes
Similar symptoms of eating disorders, little less severe and regular as the disorders. Finctioning remains intact and food does not occupy most of the day, but usually reoccupation with ‘healthy eating’ or attention to metrics.
Female athlete triad
Combination of ED, amenorrhea and osteoporosis. Life-threatening syndrome w irregular menstrual cycle due to ED as well as too little calcium
Predisposing factors
Athletes in general are at greater risk
Personality: perfectionism, competitive motivation, Self-esteem/anxiety traits, self-regulation
Type of sport: Lean sports, aesthetic sports, subjective judgment pressure
Coach/peer pressure; pressured to lose weight
Sociocultural: thin ideal in media, cultural/race/nationality, Muscle dysphoria
Interventions
Emphasize healthy eating and exercise habits
Emphasize performance, not weight
Recognising signs, intervene early: Much easier at early stages, being aware of early signs is important. Eg disordered eating.
Can be very difficult to notice; increasing awareness in coaches is needed, also allowing open atmosphere.
