Steam System Emergencies Flashcards
Steam pressures in the buried supply piping and in supplied buildings can be as high as _____psi and as high as _____ degrees F. (2.2)
170 psi
350 deg. F
Con Ed refers to a HELB as ____________. (3.1)
High Energy Line Break
When the FDNY responds to a steam emergency at a Con Ed generating station, what role will FDNY personnel play? (4.1)
To perform search and rescue for missing plant personnel. When entering the plant stay close to the escort provided and be guided by his advice.
A high pressure steam break in the street would be considered to be what type of incident?
Haz-Mat
How should units approach a steam line break in the street? (Tactics pg 4)
Upwind staying clear of the vapor plume
Where should the staging area be established? (Tactics pg 4)
A place where units will not be exposed to asbestos and communications are effective.
Regarding exposed buildings in the immediate vicinity of the steam break, what needs to be done with the occupants?
Prevent occupants from exiting into the exclusion zone. Evacuate from the rear or sides.
Consider shutting down HVAC systems to prevent asbestos from being drawn into the buildings.
Prepare for decon of civilians, FD members, bunker gear, tools, equipment and vehicles.
When you encounter a steam vent stack in the roadway and it has a blue stripe around it, this indicates the steam is a result of….. (4.3)
a. water leaking onto steam piping
b. a breach in the steam line itself, awaiting repair
c. a sewer leak onto the steam line
d. an excess pressure relief valve
A. water leaking onto the steam line. Not a leaking steam line.
What hazards may you encounter with a steam line break inside a building? (4.4)
Asbestos, high heat, poor visibility, potential burns
When a steam line ruptures in a building, are we allowed to shut down any valves inside or outside the building? (4.4)
Do not randomly shut off valves.
In an emergency, shut the Inside Service Valve. If possible, wait for Con Ed prior to doing so.
There is a building steam shut off outside as well. DO NOT shut off this valve.
Since a steam rupture is considered to be a haz mat incident, what are we concerning ourselves with?
Asbestos and radiological monitoring. Transmit a 10-80 code with appropriate sub code specifying asbestos release.
Agree or Disagree
Consider performing decon prior to the completion of sampling and testing.(5.e)
Agree
