Spruyt Flashcards
Main arguments
- why did sovereign states prevail?
-compares to the other two types of organizations
-city states (define territory) city league (no define territory)
Why does the peace of Westphalia play an important role in spruyt’s analysis
Spruty writes that his analysis is not based on teleological developments. What does he mean by that? Does he live up to his promise?
-
how does Spruyts approach compare to tillys?
-both interested in state formation, specifically institutions and the long-term slower development of them
-both acknowledge the importance of cities and why states prevailed
both talk about the importance of capital and extracting money
-both talk about war
-tilly places bigger emphasis on war
- spruyt more historically
- territory more important to spruyt thought they did succeed because their territory wasn’t defined and being compatibility with the emerging international relation as spruyt has more of an interest in IO
-
Tilly vs Spruyt
Tilly’s argument is more convincing as he places a greater emphasis on war as he says, “War makes the state, and the state makes war”. This can be seen in the military revolution
