Maier- The Project-State and Its Rivals Flashcards
what is the project state and how did it changed over the 20th and 21st century
The project- state was at its best a twentieth- century device for advancing what might be called the common good. It was ambitious and, yes, potentially dangerous
a way of organising political community for the common good
avoids totalitarinism
trying to get out of the dichotomies or freedom/ no freedom democracy/ totalitiarniasm they all claim common good but define it differently and its meaning has mutated so much so decides not to use it
maier begins with orban why does this particular speech illustrate the central thesis of the chapter when it comes to the ‘‘state of the state’’ in the 21th century
calls for illiberalism curtailing individual freedom in the favour of the Hungarian people
trianon collapse of empire it shrinks and ethnic hungarians who live in other states that’s why the speech is done in romania
hungrian gave citizenship them and encouraged them to vote and that’s why orban has been winning
protectionism from global elites and eurocracy those people in brussels big external cooperations, civil activists those paid by foreign companies
democracy doesnt have to be liberal
- the one in 2008
- interpreted as the rise of the left weakness and failure or the rise of populism
how does liberlism develop for earlier variants what role do ideology and political entrepreneurs play in this
main concemecpt of today populist- creating an other of the elites the people vs the elites
not top down or bottom up middle up and down middle class broadening
mairer populism in the 21st century benefits from socio economic and cultural alienation
