define nation state and nationalism
- a state in which the nation (the inhabitants) are sovereign, they determine the political course and implement it
but this required a lot of pp and so political pp was impossible in communist Poland or spain under franco
thus approach the nation through nationalism, the feeling that you belong to a larger group that sees itself as apolitical actor with a shared language and history
A nation state needs a structure and a collectivity but what this looks likes and what it means is debated.
How could nation states emerge?
- revolutionary enforcement of yoye independence as a colony
- by hegemonic unifaction eg prussia in Germany
- evolution towards autonomy only seenin balkans in the 19th century and in Ireland 20 century. canada developed own political institutions and socio econ developments in the 19th century so Canada first ns in an internal sense but externally only independent from England in 1931
