What can be issues caused upper canine infection?
Infection can perforate buccal cortex leading to periorbital cellulite - prevent eye opening
What is mx of dental abscess?
- Tx source of infection
- Drainage of abscess
- Ab if requied
When should ab not be prescribed?
Dry socket or pulpits
What is first line tx for dental abscess?
Amoxicillin 500mg TDS 5 days
What should be wary about when prescribing clarithromycin?
Clostridium difficile infections esp in eldrly pt
What are signs that pt would need urgent referral to max fax unit?
Systemic signs
Spreading infection
Raised floor mouth and tongue, difficulty swallowing or breathing, hot potato voice
What is Ludwig’s anginga?
Severe case of spreading infection w/ bilateral cellulitis affecting submandibular and sublingual space
Risks of Ludwig’s angina
Life-treating due to restriction of airway
Requires urgent hospital admission and IV ab and incision of swelling for drainage
