Sports Psychology- practises and skills Flashcards
What are open skills?
Are seen in sports where the situation is always changing. The player has to continually adapt to the situation.
Give an example of where an open skill may occur?
In sports like football or netball where the situation is always changing.
What is closed skill?
Takes place in a stable, predictable environment, and the player knows exactly what to do and when. These skills are not affected by environment.
Examples of closed skills?
A penalty in football or a three throw in basketball.
What is a basic (simple) skill?
One that the player finds easy and needs little concentration to do.
Example of basic skill?
Side-foot pass in football. Or a chest pass in netball.
What is a complex skill?
Need’s the player’s complete attention and concentration as it is technically difficult to perform.
Example of complex skill? How often do they need to be practised?
A penalty kick in football. Or a smash in tennis. Need to be practised over and over again, so they become easier in a match.
What is a low organisation skill?
Has clear, simple phases or parts.
Example of a low organisation skill?
A set shot in basketball. You can usually break down the phases and practise them separately, to improve your technique.
What is a high organisation skill?
Has a lot of complicated phases or parts. To perform these you need attention to detail, good co-ordination and timing/quick thinking.
Example of high organisation skill?
Somersault in trampolining. You cannot break this skill down or practise them separately.
What are the two types of practises?
Massed and distributed.
What is massed practise?
Where the skill is practised until learnt, without taking a break.
Who is massed practise aimed for?
Normally for athletes who are fit and experienced.
