Heart Flashcards
What is the heart?
Is a muscular pump. It has 4 chambers: two atria, and two ventricles.
What is atria?
Atria collect the blood as it comes into the heart. The atria makes up the top half of the heart.
What are ventricles?
Ventricles pump the blood out of the heart. It is in the bottom half of the heart.
What happens at the left ventricle?
Blood from the left ventricle has to go round the body, so this ventricle is thicker.
What happens at the right ventricle?
Blood from the right ventricle only has to reach the lungs, so this ventricle is thinner.
What is the septum?
A central partition which divides the heart into two halves, left and right.
What is the difference between the left and right side of the heart?
The right side pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs to pick up oxygen. Where as the left side of the heart pumps oxygenated blood from the lungs around the body
What is VO2 max
The volume of oxygen an athlete can consume while exercising at maximum capacity.
What does pulmonary mean?
To do with lungs.
What is Vena cava?
Large vein bringing deoxygenated blood into the heart.
What is Systole?
The phase of the heartbeat when the heart muscle contracts and pumps blood into the chambers into arteries.
What is diastole?
Phase of the heartbeat when the heart muscle relaxes and lets the chambers fill with blood.
What is blood pressure?
Pressure of blood against walls of blood vessels, especially arteries.
What is oxygen debt?
Amount of oxygen needed at the end of physical activity to break down any lactic acid.
What is Vasodilation?
When veins swell up or dilate; widening the lumen of the blood vessel to allow increased blood flow.
