Health
Health is not as simple as just being well. Health is a state of complete emotional/psychological, physical and social well being.
Fitness
Is the ability to meet the demands of an environment - so for a sportsman it means being in the right emotional/ psychological and physical shape to be able to do what your sport requires.
Exercise
Is any activity that needs physical effort such as cycling to school.
Performance
Is the action or process of doing something, but the term is also used to describe how you do something or how well you do it.
Sedentary
Lacking in physical activity
Cardiovascular fitness
The ability to exercise your whole body for long periods of time. An example is a footballer because they play a 90 minute game so don’t want to be tired.
Muscular strength
The amount of force a muscle can exert against a resistance. An example is rugby player or weightlifting.
Muscular endurance
The ability to use voluntary muscles repeatedly without getting tired. This is needed for middle distance running, swimming and tennis.
Flexibility
The range of motion of your joints. This is needed for gymnastics or diving. If you are flexible you are less likely to get injured.
Body composition
The percentage of body weight that is muscle, fat or bone. Some sports make your body composition vary for example rugby players that are heavy are more effective in the scrum.
BMI
Weight in kg divided by height in metres squared
Agility
The ability to change position and control the body at speed. E.g floor work exercises in gymnastics and rugby player running for the try line also needs agility to dodge tackling defenders.
Balance
Being able to keep the body stable while at rest or on the move. E.g static balance is keeping balance while stationary like a handstand. Dynamic balance is maintaining a controlled stable position while moving e.g hammer throw.
Co-ordination
The ability to use two or more body parts together.
Power
The ability to undertake strength performances quickly. It can be written as a formula: power= strength x speed.
