Define society
An organised group of people associated for the specific purpose or shared interest
Define socialisation
Lifelong process where members of a society learn its norms, values ideas practices and roles in order to take their place in that society
Internalisation
The learning of values or attitudes that are incorporated within yourself
Social issue
Problems that affect many people in society
Inequality
The unfair situation where resources or opportunities are distributed unevenly within society
Gender socialisation
The act of learning to conform to culturally defined gender roles through socialisation
Social control
A concept that refers to the way in which people’s thoughts, feelings, appearance and behaviour are regulated in social systems
Institutions
An established organisations founded for a religious, educational, professional or social purpose
Social change
An alteration in the social order of society

Inequality
The unfair situation where resources or opportunities are distributed unevenly within a society
Social class
A term used to define social inequalities ie certain groups have more access to wealth, income and power than others. Factors with contribute to social class include a persons job, family background, education and income
Social stratification
A type of social inequality where society is divided into different levels on the biases of a social characteristics, such as wealth or status
Equal opportunities
The right access the same opportunities, regardless of factors such as age, race, mental or physical capacity
Prejudice
To form an unfavourable opinion of an individual, often based on inadequate factors eg lack of tolerance, dislike or people from a specific race, religion or culture which can negatively affect a coaches treatment of a performer from an ethnic minority group
Discrimination
The unfair treatment of a persons or, minority group to make w distinction and act on a prejudice
Stereotyping
A standardised image making simple generalisations about all members of a group which allows others to categorise and treat them accordingly eg negative stereotypes about women which negatively impact on their participation in sports/ physical activity
Social action theory
This is a way of viewing socialisation, emphasising social action
