Arousal Flashcards
Define arousal
An energised state, a readiness to preform
When is arousal present?
Before, during and after sport in varying levels
How can arousal affect a performance
The correct amount if arousal can push people to perform at their best levels but too little arousal can mean they do not perform their skill with enough force, while too much arousal could mean they use too much force and become inaccurate.
What can cause a change in arousal
Being watched
By a challenging situation such as an important match
What is the drive theory
Initial motivation causes increased drive, more effort, more success and a religion of the same response. Increases in a linear fashion
What is the drive theory formula
P= f(d x h)
What happens at high Arousal
At high arousal we pick up less information through attention narrowing and a focus on the dominant response
Effect of the dominant response
If the task is simple or the performer is an expert, then this response will be correct
Effect of the dominant response
If the task is complex or the performer is a beginner then this response may be impaired
Define zone of optimal functioning
Area of controlled arousal and high performance
Explain the inverted u theory
A theory that links arousal and performance by stating that increased arousal improves performance to an optimal point at moderate levels of arousal
How can the incorrect level of arousal affect a performance
Being over- and under aroused can both negatively affect the performance
How can personality affect arousal
At low level of arousal-
