Define Spinal Cord Injury
damage of the spinal cord resulting from traumatic or non-traumatic causes
What does the “people first” language encourage?
Encourages use of terminology that doesn’t define the person by their disability while avoiding value judgements
What is considered a “traumatic cause”?
Injury resulting from trauma to the spinal cord from traumatic events such as; car crashes, falls, violence, or sports injury

When discussing extent of a SCI, what does complete severance mean?
There is a full loss of mobility & sensation below the affected region
When discussing extent of a SCI, what does incomplete severance mean?
Some mobility & sensation remaining below the affected region
What is the difference between; Para vs Tetra vs Quadra Plegia?
1.) Paraplegia = los of function below the lumbar/sacral region
2.) Tetraplegia = loss of function below the thoracic region
4.) Quadriplegia = loss of function below the cervical region
How many people worldwide suffer from a Spinal Cord Injury?
15.4million
What is the rate of spinal cord injuries in men vs women?
Men experience 3.2x more than females
- could be due to high risk sports, car accidents, & violence
What is the % of SCI’s caused by traumatic vs non-traumatic events?
80% = trauma & 20% = non-traumatic
What are some Physical Features/Implications of a spinal cord injury?
- Spasticity (due to paralysis)
- Pressure Ulcers
- Respiratory Complications
- Autonomic Dysreflexia = sudden hypertension & cardiac arrhythmias due to overreaction of ANS
- Deep Vein Thrombosis
- Osteoporosis
What are some Cognitive Features/Implications of a spinal cord injury?
- Chronic Pain & Fatigue = reduced focus, memory, & problem solving
- Medication side effects = may cause drowsiness, confusion, or slowed cognition
- Reduced PA = impact brain health & decrease mental sharpness
- Comorbid Conditions = degenerative diseases directly impact cognition
