spinal cord and periphery Flashcards
ventral root
motor
dorsal root
sensory
white matter
central
arranged in 3 columns - posterior, lateral, anterior
ascending pathways
sensory
descending pathways
motor
corticospinal tract
carrier motor impulses from motor cortex to skeletal muscles
posterior/dorsal column
carries touch, tactile localisation, vibration sense, proprioception
lateral spinothalamic tract
pain and temperature
where does corticospinal tract start from
motor cortex area 4
how many neurones in corticospinal tract
2
upper motor neuron and lower motor neuron
corticospinal tract: where does dessecation tale place
pyramidal decussation in medulla
how many neurones in ascending spinal tracts
3
1st order neuron
2nd order neuron
3rd order neuron
where do the different neurones in asc spinal tracts synspase/change
1st order to 2nd at grey matter of spinal cord or nucleus in medulla
2nd-3rd nucleus in contralateral thalamus
posterior/dorsal column route
1st ON ends by synapsing w cell body on 2nd ON in lower part medulla
2nd ON desuccates in medulla (tract is now medial lemniscus) and passes theough medulla, pons and midbrain to thalamus
3rd ON starts from thalamus and axons pass through IC and radiate to post central gyrus (area 2,1,3)
lateral spinothalamic tract route
1st ON enters into grey matter and ends at same level
2nd ON crosses over to reach lateral column and is now laeral spinpthalamic tract
2nd ON ends in thalamus and 3rd ON passes through IC, radiation to reach post-central gyrus
