prolonged post-ictal period
- confused
- drowsy
- irritable
- depressed
generalised tonic-clonic seizure - Mx
1st line: sodium valproate
- lamotrigine or carbamazepine
Focal seizures
start in temporal llobes
can affect hearing, speech, memory and emotions
focal seizures: features
hallucinations
memory flashbacks
deja vu
doing strange things on autopilot
focal seizures: Mx
- carbamazepine or lamotrigine
2. sodium valproate or levetiracetem
absence seizures
usually kids
patient becomes blank, stares into space and then abruptly returns to normal
unaware of surroundings
lasts 10-20s
absence seizures: Mx
sodium valproate or ethosuximide
atonic seizures
aka drop attacks
breif lapses in muscle tone
atonic seizures: can be indicitave of
lennox-gastaut syndorme
