hydrocephalus Flashcards
hydrocephalus
excess CSF within ventricles –> dilation of ventricles and range of Sx
what produces CSF
choroid plexus
what does CSF production require
ATP
sodium pumped into SAH and water follows from blood vessels
CSF pathway
lateral ventricles –> foramen of Munro –> 3rd ventricle –> cerebral aqueduct –> 4th ventricle
CSF reabsorption
arachnoid granulations contain arachnoid villi function as pressure dependant one way f valvels
communicating hydrocephalus
non-obstructive
non-communicating hydrocephalus
obstructive
communicating hydrocephalus: what problem
usually problem w CSF reabsorpion
rarely CSF overproduction
CoH - signs and symptoms
kids w unfused sutures - inc head circumference
FTT
headache N&V papilloedema gait disturbance 6th nerve palsy upgaze difficulty
Coh - ateiologu
infection
SAH
post-op
head trauma
NCH causes
aqueductal stenosis tumour, masses cyst infection haemorrhage/haematoma congenital malformations
radiology findings
dilatation of temporal horns of lateral ventricels
treatment for acute hydrocephalus
urgent or emergency placement of an external ventricular drain
CoH Mx
shunt placement
NCH Mx
sometimes shunt can be avoided by removing obstruction
shunt placement
third centriculostomy
