A
molecular mimicry
B cells create antibodies aginst pathogen antigens. Antibodeis also match myelin sheath proteins

symmetrical ascending weakness
reduced reflexes
may be peripheral sensory loss or neuropathic pain
can progress to cranial nerves and cause facial weakness

clinical course
A
Sx usually start 4wks after preceding infection
Sx peak within 2-4wks
recovery period can last months to years

nerve conduction studies
LP

raised protein

Mx
A
IV Ig (or plasma exchange)
VTE prophylaxis

prognosis
A
80% full recovery
15% left with neuro disability
5% die
