Sperry Flashcards
Sperrys aim?
To study the physiological effects of hemispheric disconnection in split brain patients and to use these results to understand how the left and right hemispheres work in people.
Sperrys IV and DV?
IV: whether the person has had hemispheric disconnection
DV: participants performance on the two hemispheric tests.
Sperrys sample?
11 epileptic patients who had had surgery and had all had epileptic treatment but didnt respond to drugs.
9 had recent surgery
2 had their corpus collosums cut.
Opportunity sampling
Sperrys research method?
Quasi-experiment/ case study
What approach is sperry in?
Phsyiological
Sperrys procedure?
Visual fields test- ps look at centre point and an image flashes up on either r or l of visual field for 100ms and they are to say what they saw
Both visual fields- image on both sides of the point and asked to draw what they saw
Tactile test, one hand- without knowledge of what, object placed into one of the hand and they are asked to find the corresponding object in a bag
Both hands- objects placed in both hands and asked to find corresponding object in bag
Sperry results?
- could recognise an object if shown twice to same visual field
- if shown to rvf they could say they’d seen it
- if asked to close their eyes and draw what they’d seen, they drew what they saw in their left vf
- object placed in r hand they could identify it by name
Sperry conclusion?
Results support the idea of lateralisation of the function of the brain, with different areas of the brain specialising in different tasks
