Q

Savage-rumbaughs procedure?

A
  1. Communication system was through lexigrams and through an electric keyboard which brightened when touched.
  2. Early rearing and exposure to lexigrams: kanzi was exposed to lexigrams from the age of 2 1/2 months and mulika at 12 months.
  3. Common chimps interacted with humans during training and keyboard didnt have a speech synthesiser.
  4. Food corresponded with a place in the forest and after a while chimps could lead a stranger around the forest.
  5. Formally tested

Q

What were the results to savage rumbaugh?

A

Kanzi and mulika used gestures naturally, bonobos gestures were more explicit than common chimps. Pygmy chimps used lexigram symbols in context. Over 17 months, kanzi used 2540 unimitated combinations and 265 which were prompted. Used imitation when leatning new words. Kanzi and mulika did well on the formal tests and chose the right pictures when prompted by lexigrams.
