Developmental Approach Flashcards
Key assumption of developmental approach?
Certainly identifiable changes in people from conception to death.
Key implication of developmental approach?
Peoples behaviour will depend on their developmental stage
One strength of the developmental approach?
It is useful as it has many practical applications which can be used in childcare and education. For example in samuel and bryants study children of different ages are seen to have different cognitive abilities. It allows teachers to use appropriate teaching methods for children.
Strength of the developmental approach?
We can see how people develop over time, we know what behaviours to expect from people of different ages. For example, in samuel and bryants study, children under 7 couldnt conserve as well as older children. However, this doesnt take into account individual differences.
Weakness of developmental approach?
Includes stages of development, these stages of development can be seen to be rigid sometimes. Piaget suggested children wouldnt be able to conserve under 7 as they were in the pre-operational stage. Therefore, this doesnt acknowlege induvidual differences, some may develop faster than others.
Weakness of developmental approach?
Uses children who may not understand the task so demand characteristics occur, may not be true of what children are capable of and ethical issues arise. Freuds studies where hans father asked leading questions. Therefore, using children may lower validity.
