Maguire Flashcards
Maguire aim?
Investigate the differences in the brain, especially the hippocampus in london taxi drivers and to see if compared to controls, a change im the hippocampus would be observed.
Maguire IV and DV?
IV: taxi driver or not a taxi driver
DV: size of the hippocampus
Maguire sample?
16 r handed taxi drivers aged 32-62 who had all been licensed taxi drivers for at least a year.
Control group was 50 scans from a database and cab centre wherr they were scanned.
Opportunity sampling
Maguire research method?
Quasi/lab experiment using correlational analysis.
Maguire procedure?
Taxi drivers turned up and had an MRI scan, all scans were dome using the same scanner. The size of the hippocampus was calculated using pixel counting by hand or by VBM which was a computer system which also measured volume, diversity and the amount of grey matter.
Maguire results?
VBM results showed there was an increase in grey matter in only 2 areas of the brain in taxi drivers, the grey matter in taxi drivers had a hgher volume and was more diverse. Pixel counting showed no difference in the hippocampus. Correlational analysis showed a positive correlation between the right-posterior hippocampus and the length of time spent as a taxi driver.
Maguire conclusion?
The human brain has plasticity, it has the ability to change to meet the demands of the environment.
