What is the aim to reicher and haslams study?
To study the way people respond to a system of inequality. Do they accept it or resist it?
What were the 4 hypothesis to reicher and haslams study?
- To develop ethical guidelines for examining psychological issues in large studies.

332 men responded to the advert, only 15 were chosen from 3 screening phases, divided into 5 groups of 3 and all matched on personslities. 1 randomly selected as the guard and the other two as prisoners.

Guards arrive in a car together, given uniforms and told to keep everything in order. Prisoners arrive together and their heads are shaved.
What happened on day 1 of reicher and haslams study?
Guards and prisoners arrive separately, prisoners food wasnt very nice and they had to serve nice food to guards. They soon realise the arent equal, reicher and haslam announce there will be an opportunity for a prisoner to be promoted to a guard.
What happened in day 2 of reicher and haslams study?
Guards become uncomfortable with the level of inequality and they offer their food to prisoners.
Day 3 of reicher and haslams study?
Guards announce who got the promotion and it is made clear there will be no more, prisoner solidarity.
Day 4 of reicher and haslam?
Prisoners plot against guards, ‘us and them’, guards still act as equals which unfuriates prisoners. Prisoners united, guards disunited.
Day 5 of reicher and haslam?
New prisoner introduced, a trade unionist who eliminates all conflict by suggesting prisoners and guards work together to revolt against experimenters. Collective plan is a forum where they all share their problems.
Day 6 of reicher and haslam?
Trade unionist withdrawn. Idea of the forum rapidly falls apart and the conflict resumes. The prisoners escape and the guards lose control, the system collapses.
Day 7 of reicher and haslam?
Guard regime fails, the still try to act normally but it doesnt work. They vote on a new structure where everyone is treated equally, a commune is set up, the new democratic system works.
