Loftus & Palmer Flashcards
What is the aim to loftus and palmers study?
Study 1: investigate the effects of leading questions on our ability to accurately remember events.
Study 2: see whether the results to study 1 were due to response bias or whether the form of leading questions did effect the memory of an event.
What was the IV and DV in study 1 of loftus and palmer?
IV: verb used in the critical question.
DV: participants estimated speed in MPH.
What was the IV and DV in study 2 of loftus and palmer?
IV: verb used in critical question.
DV: participants answer to the question ‘did you see any glass?’
What was the sample in loftus and palmers first study?
45 participants, in 5 groups of 9 all from washington uni.
Opportunity sampling.
What was the sample in loftus and palmers second study?
150 participants in 3 groups of 50 all from washington uni.
Opportunity sampling
What was the research method used in loftus and palmers study?
Laboratory experiment
What was the procedure of study 1 in loftus and palmers study?
7 film clips of automobile accidents.
- Participants were in 5 groups and each group was shown a different film clips in different orders.
- Given a questionnaire asking what they saw
- Including critical question ‘how fast were cars going when they … Into each other? Verb was either smashed, hit, bumped or contacted’
- 90 minutes
Procedure to study 2 of loftus and palmer?
- 3 groups all saw the same film clip
- Asked to describe what they had seen
- Group 1 asked speed of cars when they hit.
- Group 2 asked speed of cars when they smashed.
- Group 3 werent asked a question
L & p wanted to see if leading questions effected memory so a week later they were asked if they had seen any broken glass, was none
Results to study one of loftus and palmer?
Due to response bias, ps may have adapted their answers to the wording of the question.
Form of the question distorts the memory, word used does characterise intensity of the crash.
Results to study 2 of loftus and palmer?
More people said they saw glass in the smashed question.
Smashed=16
Hit=7
Control= 6
Conclusion to loftus and palmer?
Leading questions do actually distort memory.
What approach is loftus and palmer in?
Cognitive
