Piliavin sample?
4450 participants travelling on the 8th eve subway in NY between 11am and 3pm from april to june 1968, 55% white, 45% black. Number of people in critical area was 8.5 and 45 people on train. Opportunity sampling
Piliavin procedure?
- 103 trials between 11am-3pm, 38 drunk and 65 lame.
- 4 students, 2 males (victim and model) and 2 females (observers).
- 70 secs after train left statioj, victim fell
- Victims were male aged 26-36 and 3 were ehite, 1 was black
- Models helped early (70 secs after fall) or late (150 secs after fall).
Piliavin results?
93%- spontaneous help occurred before model interference.
An ill person is more likely to recieve help.
Race of victim doesnt really have an effect other than when drunk and victim is more likely to be helped by someone of the same race.
Piliavin conclusion?
Situational/ social factors may effect someones willingness to help.
