Q

If there is a permanent AWS magnet, [i.e. signal, PS board or Level crossing] already in the location of a TSR start area what needs to be considered with regards the warning boards?

A
  1. Warning board will not be placed between fixed AWS and the equipment it relates to.
  2. Portable magnet and Warning board will be kept at standard 180m distance but can be reduced to 45m max.
  3. The warning board can be put at the signal [if thats what is there with the fixed mag} there will not a be a temp magnet provided in this case, and the electromagnet part of the signal AWS will be disabled so that it will always give a horn indication no matter the signal aspect.

16
Q

If a TSR Warning board is put at a signal what happens to the AWS magnets in relation to that signal?

A

It will be used to trigger the horn indication in the cab for the TSR board. To do this they will disconnect the electromagnet so the AWS will give a horn warning no matter what the signal aspect shows.

Q

Consecutive TSR’s [insufficient distance]

If there is insufficient distance to arrange the warning boards for consecutive TSR’s in the normal way what will they do?

Explain the sequence of signs and magnets if the two zones are 30mph then 20mph.

A

They will place the second warning board at least 45m away from the first warning board, magnet for the second warning board will be placed immediatly after the first warning board.

  • at 180m away pass magnet for 30mph warning board
  • then arrive at 30mph warning board
  • at 30mph warning board you will get the AWS alert fo the 20mph warning board which is at least 45m upto 180m away.
  • then arrive at 20 Warning Board
  • then enter 30mph zone
  • then enter 20mph zone
  • then arrive at termination board

If there is a slower speed TSR inside a higher speed TSR but there is not suitable distance for the normal set up, what do they do with the warning boards and magnets?

A
  1. Second warning board at least 45m away from the first warning board,
  2. Magnet for the second warning board will be placed immediatly after the first warning board.
24
Q

Higher TSR speed restriction inside a slower TSR speed restriction.

  1. Does the higher speed have a warning board?
  2. Does the higher speed have a speed indication board?
  3. Does the higher speed have a termination board?
  4. Where is the termination board?
A
  1. No warning board for the Higher speed TSR
  2. No termination board for the first end point of the slower speed, Instead the higher Speed Indication baord is installed.
  3. Termination board at end of second TSR.
25
Q

Consecutive TSR Summary flash card

Explain the fundamental layout of the following:

  • Consecutive: lower after higher [normal layout/enough distance]
  • Consecutive: lower after higher [not enough distance]
  • Consecutive: Higher after Lower
A

Consecutive: lower after higher [normal layout/enough distance]

Just have the next TSR starting straight after with its own warning board instead of a termination board for the first.

Consecutive: lower after higher [not enough distance]

If there is not enough distance for this then there will be two warning boards one after another. Second no less than 45m past first board and then AWS immedialty after first board.

Consecutive: Higher after Lower [not enough distance]

They dont bother with a warning board for the higher speed, simply put up a high speed indication board.

26
Q

TSR’s inside TSR’s Summary Flah Card

Explain the fundamental layout of the following:

  • Lower TSR inside Higher TSR Area [Normal Layout]
  • Lower TSR inside Higher TSR Area [Not much space layout]
  • Higher TSR inside Lower TSR Area
A

Lower TSR inside Higher TSR Area [Normla Layout]

Slower speed will have its own Warning board and AWS magnet. the termination booard will be at the ed of the higher speed TSR.

Lower TSR inside Higher TSR Area [Not much space layout]

If there is not much space then there will be two warning boards one after another. Second no less than 45m past first board and then AWS immedialty after first board.

Higher TSR inside Lower TSR Area

Higher speed does not get a warning board, it only gets a speed indicator sign. The lower speed section is split into two and will have a warning board for each section either side of the higher speed indicator sign.

27
Q

TSR at a diverging junction and the TSR relates to the diverging route.

What additonal informaiton will be provided on the warning and indicator boards?

A

All the same boards except the boards will have a direction indicator on indicating the diverging route left or right.

28
Q

Two TSR’s, one commences past junction on diverging route

  • one for striaght route and
  • one commencing after the junciton on a diverging route.

Where will the Warning Boards be and will there be any additional informaiton?

A

Signs as normal for the straight route, however

there will be a warning board with a direction indicator before the junction.

29
Q

Two TSR’s, Both commence past junction

Where will be:

  1. Straight route warning baord?
  2. Diverging route warning board and magnet distance?
A
  1. Both wanring boards before junction
  2. Straight route board first
  3. One warning board has direction indicator
  4. If space is an issue second warning board at least 45m from first and its magnet at first warning board
30
Q

TSR’s beyond station / siding connection

  1. If the warning board is before a platform / siding connection, and
  2. Speed indicator board is >300m beyond platform or siding

what sign must be put up?

A

A Warning Repeater Board

31
Q

For a Warning Repeater Board to be put in place at a platform or siding connection how far at least must the Speed indicator board be from the platform?

A

300m

32
Q

Where would a Warning Repeater Board be positioned [three possible places}

A
  1. Next to platform starting signal
  2. Next to sidings Exit
  3. Immedialty ahead of station, siding connection or dead end platform.
33
Q

What TSR extra sign will they put in at a location where trains regulary change drivers or direction?

A

An additonal Speed indicator Board, in either

  1. Next to starting signal
  2. Immediatly ahead of station
34
Q

TSR’s across ERTMS transitions

When a TSR starts wihtin a ERTMS area but finishes outside the ERTSM area what sign will be placed at the ERTM End of Cab Signalling board?

[TSR starts in ERTM zone, ends outside]

A

Another TSR speed indicator board at the ERTMS End fo Cab Signalling Board

35
Q

When can they move a TSR?

A

When it has been published in the WON, and one of the folllowing applies:

  1. All three TSR signs moved in direction of travel [a]
  2. WB and SIB moved towards Termination Board. [b]
  3. Termination Board moved towards Speed Indicator board.

[a] Wanring, Indicator and Termination Boards

[b] WB: wanring Board, SIB: Speed indicator Board

36
Q

If they move a TSR area, where deos it need to be published?

A

WON

37
Q

If a TSR has been published in the WON’s then they dont need it, what do they need to do?

A
  1. Special Notice: details of cancellation are published in a special notice at least 24 hours before.
  2. If they dont have 24 hours, then alll boards set up as normal and SPATE boards placed over them.
38
Q

When a TSR is removed early or eased

What boards will go up when:

  1. A TSR is eased to allow a higher speed early than published in the WONS.
  2. A TSR is removed earlier than whats published in the WONS.
A
  1. Warning and Indicator boards changed to show higher speed.
  2. Warning and Indicator boards changed to either permissable speed or SPATE boards.
39
Q

What extra board do they provide at an Emergency Speed Restriction ESR?

and

What distance from TSR Warning board

A

EROS Board.

Will be at least 180m from the TSR Warning board but can be upto 400m

40
Q

If when placing the EROS board there is a signal with a fixed AWS magnet in place what three things can or cannot be done regarding the positon of the board?

A
  1. It cant be positoned between the fixed magnet and its signal.
  2. Distance of the EROS board and its magnet can be reduced to 45m.
  3. EROS board can be placed at the signal itself and use the fixed magnet which will have to have its elctro magnet part disabeld so it will give a warning horn no matter what the aspect is.
41
Q

How long will an EROS board remian in place? [two items]

A
  1. Until the restriction is published in the WONS, or
  2. Unitl it is withdrawn.
42
Q

Under what 3 circumstances must you contact the signaller IMMEDIATLY, stopping the train if required? Regarding a problem with:

  • Warning Board,
  • Repeat Warning Boards
  • Indicator Boards

And, what 1 circumstance do you need to tell the signaller AT FIRST OPPORTUNITY?

A

IMMEDIATLY:

  1. Missing
  2. Different location to one published in WONS
  3. More restrictive than in WONS
  4. Different speed shown on DMI

FIRST OPPORTUNITY:

  1. Difficult or becoming difficult to see.
43
Q

What must you do if you spot a missing or defective emergency speed indicator/EROS board?

A

Tell the signaller IMMEDIATLY, stopping the train if required.

44
Q

Definition
What is an emergency speed restriction?

A

A speed restriction which:
Has not been published in won
Has been published but the times, speed or limits are different
Has been imposed again after being withdrawn
Has been shown as an amendment to the won

45
Q

Permissible speed
What are your actions?

A

Control speed of the train to no more than the permissible speed
Make sure the whole of the train has passed clear of a section of a line with a lower speed before increasing your speed

46
Q

Temporary speed restrictions
Normal arrangements with lineside equipment
State the equipment used in connection with a TSR?

A

A portable AWS magnet is normally placed 180 metres on the approach to the warning board
A warning board is placed on the approach to the speed Indicator.
The distance between the warning board and the speed indicator is the appropriate braking distance for the permissible speed at that location.
A speed indicator is placed at the start of the TSR
A termination indicator is placed at the end of the TSR.

47
Q

Temporary speed restriction
Where there is a fixed AWS magnet
Can a warning board be placed between a fixed AWS magnet (perhaps associated with a signal) and the equipment to which if applies?

A

No usually the warning board would be placed at the signal. A temporary AWS magnet would not be provided.
Instead the driver will receive an AWS signal from the fixed magnet no matter what aspect is displayed at the signal.

48
Q

Temporary speed restriction
TSR’s beyond a station or siding connection
When would a repeating warning board be used?

A

If the warning board for the TSR is on the approach to a:
Station
Connection from a siding
Connection from a dead end platform
If the speed indicator is more than 300 metres beyond the station a repeating warning board is placed at one of the following locations:
Next to platform starting signal
Next to siding exit signal
Immediately ahead of the station, siding or dead end platform.
A portable AWS magnet is not provided on the approach to a repeating warning board.

49
Q

Emergency speed restrictions
What are the drivers actions?

A

Control the speed of your train to travel over the affected portion of line at no more than the speed the signaller tells you.
Make sure the whole of the train has passed clear of a section of line with a lower speed before increasing your speed.

50
Q

Emergency speed restrictions
What are the normal arrangements?

A

A portable AWS magnet is placed 180 meters on approach to the emergency indicator
The emergency indicator is placed at least 180 metres and not more than 400 metres on the approach to the warning board.
The portable AWS magnet for the warning board is placed at the emergency indicator

51
Q

Emergency speed restrictions
Where there is a fixed AWS magnet
What is the arrangement of equipment?

A

The emergency indicator is not placed between a fixed AWS magnet and the equipment to which it applies.
The emergency indicator may be placed at the signal in which case the associated magnet is disconnected and a portable AWS magnet not provided.
Therefore the driver will always receive an AWS warning indication no matter what aspect is displayed at the signal.

52
Q

Emergency speed restrictions
How long will the ESR stay in position for?

A

The emergency indicator will stay in position until:
Details of the speed restriction appear in the WON or
The speed restriction is withdrawn.

53
Q

Defective or missing ESR or TSR equipment
Who must you tell if you see that a warning board, a repeating warning board or a speed indicator is:
Missing
In a different place to what I’d advised in the WON
Is more restrictive than what is shown in the WON

A

Signaller immediately

54
Q

Speed restriction boards or indicator that are becoming difficult to see
Who must you tell if a warning board, repeating warning board or speed indicator is difficult to see?

A

Signaller at first opportunity

55
Q

Defective or missing ESR or TSR
If the emergency indicator is faulty or missing what should you do?

A

Tell signaller immediately stopping the train specifically to do so.
