Speeds Module SP Flashcards
What is a blanket speed restriction?
A speed restriction that applies to a whole area rather than a geographical location.
When a sign shows differential on PS, ESR, TSR boards the higher speed relates to what trains?
- Passenger
- Parcel and postal
- Light Loco
What is an enhanced permissible speed
Relates to 221 and class 390 in tilting mode. when differential speed are on the sign, the higher speed relates to 390.
When transiting from a lower speed area to a higher speed area when can you start accelerating the train?
As soon as the WHOLE train has passed through the lower speed area.
If permissible speeds are shown for train type, what are the six train types?
- HST: High Speed Train
- MU: Multi Unit Trains
- DMU: Diesel Multi Unit
- EMU: Electric Multi Unit
- SP: Sprinter multi Unit Train
- CS: Class 67 Loco
What train does the prefix SP relate to on permissible speed boards?
Sprinter Multi Unit Train
What is a TSR
Temporary Speed Restriction
When going through a TSR what two things do you need to make sure of:
- Control speed to no more than the speed shown on the warning board or speed shown on DMI
- Make sure your WHOLE train has passed the lower speed section before accelerating.
What are the standard TSR boards and order?
- TSR Warning Board [AWS mag 180m ahead]
- TSR Indicator board
- TSR Termination board
What is the space between a TSR warning Board and TSR indication board called?
Braking Distance
ERTM TSR Sections: where there are NO lineside signals will AWS magnets and lineside equipment be provided?
no
ERTM TSR Sections: where there are lineside signals will AWS magnets and lineside equipment be provided?
Yes
When operating ERTMS what should you make sure of when it comes to TSR’s?
- TSR programmed in before it becomes active, and if available, have a competent person check
- its programmed in
- Activated at required time
- removed/changed at required time
If there is a permanent AWS magnet, [i.e. signal, PS board or Level crossing] already in the location of a TSR start area what needs to be considered with regards the warning boards?
- Warning board will not be placed between fixed AWS and the equipment it relates to.
- Portable magnet and Warning board will be kept at standard 180m distance but can be reduced to 45m max.
- The warning board can be put at the signal [if thats what is there with the fixed mag} there will not a be a temp magnet provided in this case, and the electromagnet part of the signal AWS will be disabled so that it will always give a horn indication no matter the signal aspect.
The AWS Temporary magnet will be provided with a TSR warning board, usually at 180m, but what is the lowest figure this can be reduced to if the circumstances require?
45m
If a TSR Warning board is put at a signal what happens to the AWS magnets in relation to that signal?
It will be used to trigger the horn indication in the cab for the TSR board. To do this they will disconnect the electromagnet so the AWS will give a horn warning no matter what the signal aspect shows.
On a single or Bi direction line will TSR equipment be provided in both directions?
Yes, same boards in both directions with temporary AWS magnets.
And, AWS Cancellation Indicator boards so the driver can disregard the AWS for the one relating to the other direction.
On a single or Bi direction line when passing over a AWS magnet relating to the TSR warning board in the other direction how far past the AWS magnet will the AWS Cancellation board be positioned?
180m but can be reduced to 45m if circumstances require.
Consecutive TSR’s [normal layout]
If a slower TSR zone is immediately after a higher TSR zone will a Termination board be provided at the end of the first TSR zone and before the higher TSR zone?
no, you will just get another TSR Warning Board with the new lower speed on.
Consecutive TSR’s [insufficient distance]
If there is insufficient distance to arrange the warning boards for consecutive TSR’s in the normal way what will they do?
Explain the sequence of signs and magnets if the two zones are 30mph then 20mph.
They will place the second warning board at least 45m away from the first warning board, magnet for the second warning board will be placed immediatly after the first warning board.
- at 180m away pass magnet for 30mph warning board
- then arrive at 30mph warning board
- at 30mph warning board you will get the AWS alert fo the 20mph warning board which is at least 45m upto 180m away.
- then arrive at 20 Warning Board
- then enter 30mph zone
- then enter 20mph zone
- then arrive at termination board
Consecutive TSR’s [speed increase]
If the TSR speed INCREASES witnin the TSR zone how will the signs show this?
There will just be a Speed Indicator Board at the speed increase highlighting the higher speed, everyting else will be normal.
One SLOWER TSR inside a higher TSR.
If there is a slower speed TSR inside a higher speed TSR, what would be the normal set up of the named boards below for the slower section when distance allows?
[warning boards, speed indication boards, and termination boards]
- Slower TSR will have it’s own warning board and AWS magnet.
- Slower TSR will NOT have a termination board.
- Termination board will be at the end of the higher speed TSR.
