Passing Signal at Danger... Module: S5 Flashcards
What is an EoA and what do you need to pass it?
End of Authority [EoA]
- locatiom not permittted to pass and target speed should be zero.
- You can only pass an EoA with a MA [Movement Authority] or when specifically authorised.
When can you be given permission to pass a signal at danger or an EoA without a MA? [17 item, im adding to this one as i go, its long] page 6
- Signal is defective
- Signal can’t be cleared: sig or level crossing equip has failed
- Signal can’t be cleared; a reversed train set to start from beyond signal
- For Shunting Purposes
- Train to enter for AERR [in signals module]
- Emergency
- Line to be Checked it is clear
- Single Line working
- Pilot Man working
In order to pass a signal at danger or an EoA without a MA you must get the personal authority of: [there are four possible people dependant on the situation]
- Signaller
- Shunter [acting on signallers A]
- Pilot-man / hand signaller [acting on signallers A]
- Competent person authorised in the rules
When being signalled through a signal at danger via a hand signaller or pilot-man: if on the approach to the signal the hand signaller shows you a yellow flag can you proceed through the signal?
NO
Stop the train and receive the relevant information from him/her.
The only exception is when the signaller has already told you the relevant information and told you to obey the handsignaller instruction, only then can you continue without stopping.
If cleared to pass a signal at danger or a EoA without a MA for Shunting purposes, once you have completed the shunting move can you contiue on your journey?
NO
once you have completed your shunting move you must STOP and await until the signal is cleared or recieve a MA or the signaller authorises it.
What is the procedure you must go through when cleared to pass a signal at danger which relates to driving.
- Understand the Information given
- Ensure it relates to you
- Ensure it is correct signal; Sig number
- How far movement cleared for
- Reset DRA: should have been set at red
- Isolate TPWS [temp isolate]
- disregard AWS Horn / Disregard SPAD board
- Stop no further than the movement is cleared for
Regarding the TPWS and passing signals at danger. The driver has two options regarding the TPWS, they are:
- TPWS isolation button, and
- TPWS train stop override button
Under what four situations would you use the TPWS isolation button?
- When ESW [Emergency special working] i
- When TBW [Temp block working]
- Single line when working by pilotman and passing multiple signals
- Line under possession
How long does the TPWS Train Stop Override button last and what does it do?
Approx 20 seconds and prevents the TSS [train stop system] from intiating.
What does the TPWS isolation button do and where is it located.
- Located away from the driver immediate reach.
- Isolates the TPWS until reinstated.
- Must be used during; ESW / TBW / Pilotman SL / Possessed Lines
It does not come back automatically, you must be put back on as soon as you are clear of the area. It will come back on when the train cab is shut down and restarted though.
When the TPWS TS Override button is operated how long will it approximatly last?
20 Seconds or when passed over the TSS loop.
When passing a signal at danger for the first time what must you check are in the correct positon if possible and at what max speed over?
- Points
- Switch Diamonds
- Swing nose crossings
MAX SPEED 15 MPH
When passing signal at danger when can you proceed upto 50mph?
- Single Bi Line going wrong way: 50MPH
- TBW // ESW: 50MPH
- During modififed working on single lines
- During passing two main aspects at danger
- During failure of a block instrument on an ABL [ab block line]
When passing a signal at danger when can you proceed upto LINESPEED?
- Single Bi Line going Correct way
- Single Bi Line with pilotman
- Single Line with token
When authorised to pass a signal at danger how must you approach level crosssings?
Approach at caution and make sure it is safe to cross.
When passing a signal at danger what level crossings must you approach at caution and make sure are clear before proceeding over?
- Controlled [eg, CCTV/ OD / RC / MG / MCB]
- Auto Crossings the Signaller has told you wont operate normally
- Barrow/foot crossing with white light the Signaller has told you wont operate normally
Name all the Controlled level crossing? [5 items]
- CCTV
- OD
- MG
- MB
- RC
If you have been passed through a signal at danger and can see the next signal is displaying a PROCEED aspect what speed can you continue at?
The speed appropriate to that signal unless the signaller has told you to operate at reduced speed for that portion of the track.
If the signaller has authorised to pass a signal at danger and obey all others, what does this mean regarding positon lights in the section upto the next main signal.
It means you can proceed upto the next main apsect stop signal ahead ignoring the aspects dispalyed on ground position lights.
If the signaller authorises you past a signal at danger and to proceed upto a specified ground positon light, you must: [two things]
- Only proceed as far as that signal
- STOP at it regardless of its aspect
What is Emergency Special Working? (ESW) brief description
It is the process of signalling a train past two or more consecutive signals that have failed. It is similar in purpose to TBW but a new alternative. It speeds up the flow of traffic and when there is a failure and is more responsive than TBW.
Under Emergency Special working what must be considered when the signaller/competent person selects the exit signal?
- Must be working signal that can be set to danger from a signal box.
- Easily recognisable location, for example at a station, bridge or junction.
- ESW exit board, although this may not be there early in the ESW working so be alert.
what is the max speed on a ESW and TBW?
emergency special working
temporary block working
50mph
if you are the first train through an Emergency special working ESW or a temporary block working TBW, what is the additional procedure you must follow?
proceed at caution and inspect each point, switch diamond or swing nose junction to ensure they are fitting correctly. You must not exceed 15mph over these points.
who will give you an emergency special working ticket [NR3190] and when?
The signaller will give it to you over the phone or over the GSMR when stopped at the stop signal before entering an Emergency Special Working block. You will then mark it as cancelled at the exit signal after you have spoken to the signaller to be cleared out of the block, you will do this by writing CANCELLED across the ticket.
