Preparation and movement of Trains: Module TW1 Flashcards
If your train has been bought to a stand by a brake application which you did not make, what do you need to do?
- Check to see if the train equipment operated, ie AWS, ERTMS, or TPWS.
- If it did: contact Sgnaller immediatly [except at buffer stop, bring train forward first in this scenario]
- If it did not: find out if guard or pasenger with communication apperaturs did it.
- If neither of these: Talk to signaller to find out if your train has become divided and if it is obstructing other lines.
[must assume train has become divdied if tail lamp is missing, or the brake pipe is open at the rear]
Abnormal Brake Application:
When must you assume your train has become divided? [2 items]
- When tail lamp is missing
- The brake pipe is open at the rear
If the train intiated a brake application and it was not the onboard equipment such as AWS, TPWS or ERTMS. What would be the next things you check?
- Did the guard do it?
- Did a passenger do it?
Assisting failed loco-hauled trains in the rear
If your train has failed when can you allow a train to assist you from the rear? [1 item]
Only if you can apply the emergency brake in an emergency.
Assisting failed loco-hauled trains in the rear
If your train has failed what is your procedure for allowing a train to asist you? [4 item]
- Next Location: Allow the movement to the next place the train can be taken off the running line or loco attached to the front.
- Control: Make sure you can fully control the train thoughout.
- Clear Understanding: with assisting driver, when it will start, stop and how it is controlled.
- GSMR: can use this for controling the mvoement thoughout the movement.
Assisting failed loco-hauled trains in the rear
If you are assisting a failed train what is your procedure? [5 item]
- TPWS: temp isolate at start of movement.
- TPWS: Reinstate immediatly on seperation
- ERTMS: Ensure in correct mode at start of movement
- ERTMS: Immediatly ensure correct mode after movement.
- Make no further movement until signaller authorises it.
Failed Air-braked Train
What trains can only assist and air braked train in the rear? [3 items]
and
max speed?
- Light loco [can assist others if it has brake pipe thoughout]
- Air-braked train
- Vacuum braked train hauled by a dual-braked loco
25mph max speed
Failed Air-braked Train
If a light Loco is fitted with an operational brake pipe thoughout the train, aswell as an air-braked train, what three other trains is it allowed to assist?
- Passenger [empty or loaded]
- Post or Parcel
- Any other train running with passenger brake timings.
Failed Air-braked Train: Assisting in rear
When can a single-piped air braked train be assisted in the rear? [2 items]
If the failed locomotive is:
- Capable of maintianing its own main resevoir pressure
- Fitted with an assistance to failed train cock [AFT].
Failed Air-braked Train: Assisting in rear
When can a two pipe-piped air braked train be assisted in the rear? [2 items]
if the main resevoir pipe is:
- Coupled or operative thoughout failed train
- Coupled to the assisting loco
When attend for and for leaving duty what two things must you do?
- Attending: Read all notices that relate to you.
- Leaving: Hand in any fully written reports of any irregularties or exceptional incident.
Brake system requirments?
Loco hauled trains or HST: when must you carry out a brake continuity test on these trains? [5 items]
[note this is not the running brake test, the continutiy test is a little more involved]
- When loco is coupled to the train
- After brake defect is repaired
- After train left unattended and shut down
- When train is uncoupled
- When a vehicle is coupled to the train
Brake system requirments?
Multi Unit Passenger Train: when must you carry out a brake continuity test on these trains?
[note this is not the running brake test, the continutiy test is a little mroe involved]
Rule Book answer: when your company driver policy requries it.
Can you allow coaching Stock with one vehicle with an automatic brake isolated to start a journey?
Yes, when the journey is nnot starting from a maintenance depot and if certain conditons are met. [conditons in later qu]
Under what conditons can you allow coaching Stock with one automatic brake isolated to start a journey? [4 items]
- At least 5 coaching stock vehicles
- Automatic brake working on last coach
- on multi units: automatic brake working on first and last vehicle
- max 10mph below permissable speed down to 35mph.
When coaching Stock has one automatic brake isolated what is the maximum speed allowed?
10mph below the permissable speed, however it does not need to be reduced further at 35mph.
How many automatic brakes are allowed to be isolated on the below length trains to still be able to start a journey that does not start at a maintenance depot?
- 10-14 coaching stock vehicles
- 15-19
- 20-24
- 25+
- 2 vehciale with isolated brakes
- 3
- 4
- 5
What speed do you carry out a runnig brake test at? [2 items]
A speed that is high enough for you to be sure that:
- The brakes are operating effectivly.
- The speed reduces.
Running Brake Test
when must you carry out a running brake test on a multi unit passenger train?
Rule Book answer: when your company policy requires.
However, most likely in the following:
- Start of your first journey
- Steep falling gradient
- When train conistency changes, ie coupleing or uncoupling
- when changing ends
- Additonal brake test in snow
Running Brake Test
when must you carry out a running brake test on a loco hauled train and HST.
- Start of first journey
- Before first stopping point
- A crossing place on single line
- Steep falling gradient
- A terminus or dead end platform line
If there are damaged, distorted rails, or broken fishplates along a route what will happen?
The signaller will tell you what is happening and what to do with a maximum speed over the affected area.
If the signaller has told you about a bridge that has been struck by a road vehicle he will tell you where and what has happpened along with a maxium speed. When can you increase your speed again?
When the WHOLE of your train is clear of the bridge
If an overline bridge has been struck by a road vehicle the signaller may ask you to inspect the bridge to see if it safe for trains to pass under. What is the process you must follow in this situation? [3 items]
- Stop your train short of the bridge
- Check for obvious damage and debris on the line
- Tell signaller if it appears safe for trains to pass under it.
[If no damage or debris you may pass under it MAX SPEED 5mph]
If you believe there are track defects what must you tell the signaller as soon as possible?
- Location
- Defect type
- Bridge or viaduct close by
- As much info of defect as possible
What are the four types of rail defect?
- Track defect seen
- Track defect felt
- Track defect heard
- Deterioration of ride quality
Give a couple examples of a ‘seen’ rail defect:
- Broken Rail
- Split Rail
- Broken fishplate
Tell signaller as soon as possible
Give a couple examples of a ‘felt’ rail defect
- lurch or dip
- shaking /vibrating
- swaying
- pitch up or down
Tell signaller as soon as possible
Give a couple examples of a ‘heard’ rail defect
- Bang
- Rattle
- Grinding
Tell signaller as soon as possible
Give a couple examples of a ‘deteriation of quality’ rail defect
- Felt ride quality has deteriated since the last time you drove the route
- Dont need to tell signaller as soon as possible, just tels ops when your back.
If you notcie a ride quality rail defect do you need to tell the signaller as soon as possible?
No, not this defect, the others yes, but this one you can just tell ops when your back.
