GSM-R signal short code plate

At some locaiton the GSMR may not be able to route the dirver through to the correct siganller for that section so these signal phone number plates are put up to remind the dirver which number to use for the correct signaller for that section.

The short code plate is provided so the driver doesnt have the hardship of typing the whole 8 digit number, and can just use the quicker 4 digit number. [god bless the unions reducing the workload, nothing slips through the unions]

100
Q

What are these phones all about?

A

Top ones are Signal Post Telephone, the five denotes how long a driver can wait at the signal before contacting the signaller. For exmaple, you stop at a red and see a train crossing ahead and you therefore know why your stopped you can wait until speaking to the signaller but if the signal is still red at 5 minutes you must ring him up.

Bottom one is a Line side Telephone: Provided to speak to the signaller

Green: Cleared to pass over leevl crossing under local control [this guy will never show a yellow flag to cross a level crossing becasue the driver could become confused and think he is clearing him to pass the intial signal at danger whihc he is not doing]

113
Q

What is Track Circuit block Signalling

A

TCB signalling relies on continuous detection of trains through the block section. The track circuit gives the signaller continuous indication of a trains presence.

Signaller is free to admit a train into a block if it is clear of trains.

114
Q

What is Permissive Working

A

It allows the signaller to allow one or more trains into a block at any one time.

Reasons for this might be to brings trains into a platform, assist a failed train, couple/uncouple, controlled emergency evacuation at a platform etc

115
Q

True or False, most signalling systems work of the principle of one train in a block or signal section at any one time?

A

True

116
Q

When you have been cleared for permissive working and proceeding towards a train at a stand how far should you stop short of that train?

A

2m [6ft 6inch]

[if you need to couple up with this train you would still stop two metres away before moving closer]

117
Q

If you are permissive working and following a moving train, what three things do you need to do?

A
  1. Proceed at caution
  2. Leave enough room between your train and the one ahead to ensure if the train stops suddenly you have enough space and time to stop wihtout colliding
  3. if the train ahead is cleared through a signal you do not folllow, the signal will need to be reset to danger and then back to green if you are to follow.
118

  • Answer his/her questions
  • Do not move unitl instructed to do so
120
Q

What is the DRA

A

Drivers Reminders Appliance

Its is a red button that when pulled out illuminates red and will not allow traction power to be taken, It should be used by the driver to remind the driver of a danger aspect ahead. For example, when passing a single yellow and then stopping at a station the driver should set it, this will remind the driver when setting off that he or she is at caution.

121
Q

When should a driver set the DRA? [5 points]

clue: S S S E E R E

Code 7: Nothing happened when it should have [WS]

Code 16: TPWS should have activated and it did not. [WS]

Code 17: TPWS applied brakes and it shouldnt have. [RS]

If these happen, STOP the train and contact the siganller. For right side faults the RT3185 form can be completed later and handed into your DM. For wrong side faults the form must be completed with the signaller there and then.

128
Q

  2. STOP AND WAIT for instructions
  3. Hand signaller will pass instructions from Signaller to you [make sure you understand them]
  4. Once understood HS will remove detonator and then display a yellow flag.

[only move your train when you have received information / understood it and received a yellow hand signal]

140
Q

If you approach a signal at danger which is being operated by hand signaller who is there to authorise trains through at danger, and on the approach he displays a yellow flag to you what will you do?

A

STOP

The process when passing a signal at danger under a hand signallers authority is to stop and receive information relating to passing at danger and fully understand them. Only then should he should display a yellow hand signal and authorise you through.

[If you fall into this trap and let him send you through incorrectly this is a SPAD]

The only exception is when you have been in contact with the signaller already and he has relayed the information relevant to you and authorised you to follow the hand signaller signal.
