Signalling: RS521 Flashcards
What Type of Signal does this sign indicate?
and
What is its definition?
Controlled Signal
A signal operated by the controller,
some of which may be set by the signaller to work automatically.
What Type of Signal does this sign indicate?
and
What is its definition?
A signal operated by the the passage of trains by making use of the track circuit.
On some occasions the signaller and a person operating a signal post replacement switch can place the signal to danger.
What Type of Signal does this sign indicate?
and
What is its definition?
Semi Automatic Signal
Usually operated by the passge of trains by use of the track circuit. However it can be operated by the siganller from a signal box or groundframe. Also by a person operating a signal post replacement switch.
What Type of Signal does this sign indicate?
and
What is its definition?
Controlled Distant Signal
Controlled: controlled by signaller from signal box or groundframe
Distant: cannot show a stop aspect. Identified by a white diamond or R symbol.
What Type of Signal does this sign indicate?
and
What is its definition?
Outer Distant Signal
Distinguished by the RR
What Type of Signal does this sign indicate?

What is its definition?
Controlled Banner Repeater Signal
Banner repeater signals are provided on the approach to certain signals which have restricted sighting (for example because of curvature of the line, buildings, overbridges or tunnels), to give advance information of the signal aspect. Their meanings are. Banner on: The signal to which it applies is at danger.
What Type of Signal does this sign indicate?
and
What is its definition?
Co-acting signal
A second signal head close to the main one that displays the same aspects. They are provided when the main apsect has sighting issues.
What Type of Signal does this sign indicate?
and
What is its definition?
Intermediate Block Signal
A signal that controls the exit from an intermediate block section, and the entrance to an absolute block section or another intermediate block section.
What could be the normal sequence of signals for a three aspect signal system when being stopped?
- Green [Proceed]
- Single Yellow [Caution]
- Red [Stop]
What could be the normal sequence of signals for a four aspect signal system when being stopped?
- Green [Proceed]
- Double Yellow [Preliminary Caution]
- Single Yellow [Caution]
- Red [Stop]
What is the purpose of a junction indicator and what does it show?
Junction indicators are provided to show if a train is being signalled on a route to the left or right of the striaght route.
Normally located above the signal and will display a line of white lights when a proceed aspect is displayed.
At a junction with junction indicators will the straight ahead route have a junction indicator?
Generally No.
However, if the straight ahead route is not obvious, a junction indicator will be provided for the straight ahead route.
What is a route indicator?
A route indicator is provided at a signal and shows the route the trina is cleared on. They can show letters or numbers and can be with junction indicators. Also known as theatre box.
What does a flashing yellow aspect mean?
Facing points at a junction ahead are set for a diverging route with a lower speed than the straight route.
What is the normal signal sequence of aspects when approaching a diverging junction onto a slower diverging route in a three aspect signalling system?
- Green
- Flashing Yellow
- Solid yellow with Junction indicator
- Red after junction
The solid yellow at the junction with the junction indicator means expect red next.
What is the normal signal sequence of aspects when approahcing a diverging junction onto a slower diverging route in a four aspect signalling system?
- Green
- Flashing Two Yellows
- Flashing Single Yellow
- Solid Yellow with junction indicator
- Red after junction
What is a splitting distant signal?
I dont know, i need to do this one.
What is the purpose of Position Lights?
Position light signals allow a train to move into a section under caution, the line ahead may be occupied so the driver must drive at caution towards the next train, signal or buffer stop, and be prepared to stop short of any obstruction.
What are the two types of positon lights?
1. Associated Position Lights: Normally positioned with a main aspect signal, the normal apsect is unlit and this means obey main signal.
2. Ground Position Lights: Normally positioned at ground level independant of a main aspect. When proceeding on the authority of a main aspect all position lights in that section will show a proceed aspect.
What does a ground position light showing red/red or red/white mean?
Stop
[note: when proceeding on the auhority of a main aspect, any ground position light signals along the route between the main running signals will show a proceed aspect]
What does a ground position light showing yellow/white or yellow/yellow mean?
[Also known as a position light shunt signal]
Position light shunt signal: This is a STOP signal with regards to the main line to which it applies.
Other movements can pass this signal without it being cleared when a movement is being made towards the shunt neck or siding and not the running line.
What does a ground position light showing white/white at 45 degrees mean?
This authorises the driver to proceed at caution towards the next train, signal, or buffer stop and be prepared to stop short of any obstruction.
What does this Associated Position Light indicate?
- The driver is authorised to pass the main signal at danger,
- proceed at caution towards the next train, signal or buffer stop, and
- be prepared to stop short of any obstruction
Identitfy this sign set up and what it means?
Position Light with route indicator.
Displays letters and numbers and shows the route the trian is being signalled onto.
