Dealing with accident/evacuation: Module M1 Flashcards
The immediate things you do following an accident?
Hazard warning lights on (or red light forward)
Tell the signaller and request OLE shutoff if required.
Then check;
which lines obstructed and decide quickest way to stop trains.
Know your exact location
After an accident, once the signaller has told you signal protection has been provided what must you still then do?
TCOC on all obstructed lines
TCOC on your line if fully derailed.
Following an accident if the signaller has told you you have signal protection do you still need to lay TCOC’s?
Yes
When must you carry out full emergency protection?
When signaller can not provide signal protection,
Signaller cannot be contacted.
If you need help protecting a line who can you ask and what must you make sure of?
Guard or other competent person and make sure they have a clear understanding what they are doing and where.
If you have to carry out emergency protection alone which lines do you protect first.
Lines other than your own first, and then decide which direction on the other lines trains are most likely to come from.
[you would put a TCOC on your own line first if you have fully derailed]
When carrying out emergency protection if you are unsure which lines are obstructed what must you do?
Treat them all as obstructed.
How far must you walk from a a accident/ derailment before laying detonators? (Assuming no exception occurs)
2km
How many detonators do you lay?
3
How far do you place the detonators away from each other?
20m
How far should you stand away from detonators?
30m
How do you lay emergency protection? (Generic version)
- TCOC on your line is derailed
- TCOC on every obstructed line
- Proceed 2km in the directions train will come.
- Lay three detonators
- Stand there with a red danger flag out.
When in an ESW or TBW area what do you need to do?
Lay protection on your line also, even if not derailed.
When you have carried no out emergency protection what can you do the ?
Either continue walking to find a signal post phone to talk to signaller or go back to your train.
Where would you place the detonators on a double track line if you have an accident?
The other line 2km in the direction of approaching trains.
Where would you place the detonators on a multi track line if you have an accident?
On every obstructed line 2k in the direction of approaching trains.
Is the TCOC required on your own line if your train has not completely derailed?
No, only if your train has completely done derailed.
What four instances would you stop walking 2km to lay detonators.
- See a train approaching
- Reach a tunnel
- Reach a SP telephone
- Reach a signal box
- Tunnel
- Junction
What do you do if when your on your 2km walk you see a train approaching?
Quickly lay the detonators and show the danger flag.
What do you do if when your on your 2km walk you reach a signal box or telephone?
Lay the detonators and talk to the signaller, you don’t have to continue the full 2km if the signaller has assured you line protection has been provided.
What do you do if when your on your 2km walk you reach a tunnel with 2km falling within the tunnel?
Lay detonators at start of tunnel and walk through the tunnel and lay three detonators at the exit of the tunnel.
What do you do if when your on your 2km walk you reach a diverging junction?
Lay three detonators before the junction.
Lay three detonators detonators on the most likely approach next, then
Lay three detonators on the other diverging route if you have time.
In ESW or TBW what additional line must you do?
After protecting other lines you must also lay full protection on your own. You would already have laid a TCOC regardless however first, if you’re train had completely derailed.
If you discover s fire on your train what should you do?
Try and out it out, if you can’t do this in a few seconds then you must stop the train immediately.
If possible where must you not stop your train in an emergency due to fire?
- Bridge
- Viaduct
- Any other unsuitable place
What must you do regarding passengers when you have a train fire?
- Get them to move to a vehicle not on fire.
2. If required complete an evacuation.
If there is a risk of a fire spreading to other carriages what must you try if possible?
Move passengers forward and detach the affected vehicle.
If a fire has been extinguished but the train cannot proceed what do you do?
Tell signaller
Lay protection if required
If a fire has been extinguished but you can proceed what do you need to do?
Tell the signaller as soon as possible.
If there is an accidental train division?
- Find out if anyone has fallen out
- Secure gangway doors at the end
- Make sure passengers are in a safe section.
What are the drivers actions when re securing the train which became divided?
Make sure both sections are secure and all accounted fire
Tell guard what’s going on
Check couplings this o s see if they have damaged the track or line-side equipment, and no damage that may prevent recouping.
If a divided train can be recouped what is the process.
Get signaller authority for movements
Tell signaller when complete
If you are ERTMS got to get permission to continue journey.
If you can’t recouple a train that has become divided what must you do
Detonators 300m either end of the detached section and tell signaller:
You’re leaving it, and
Exact location
If you have left part of a divided train and cannot contact the signaller where must you not go beyond until speaking to the signaller?
Next stop signal Block marker (ERTMS)
If you have left a section of your vehicle can you leave a single line without speaking to the signaller?
No
When can you carry out an evacuation?
Only when absolutely necessary.
When doing a controlled evacuation what do you need to do?
Tell signaller
Ask for line protection on all affected lines
Ask for OLE shutoff if required
When doing an emergency evacuation what do you need to do?
Tell signaller
Ask for line protection on all affected lines
Ask for OLE shutoff if required.
If cannot contact signaller, must carry out emergency protection.
What are the passenger safety concerns when evacuating passengers?
Take into account:
How the passengers will be moved from the site.
The need for passengers to cross the least number of lines.
Warn passengers to stay in safe place until they can be escorted off.
