Specialised cells Flashcards
Sperm cells job?
To reach and fertilise the egg
Feature of a sperm cell
Tail to help it swim.
The mid peace has many mitochondria to release energy.
The head (acrosome) contains digestive enzymes to penetrate the egg
Large nucleus to pass on DNA.
What the nerve cells job?
To carry electrical impulses around the body
Features of a nerve cell?
Long axen to carry the impulse
Lots of dendrites to connect to other nerves
Nerve endings release, chemical messengers that cause an electrical impulse to be carried in the next nerve cell.
Features of a muscle?
Lots of mitochondria to release energy for contractions.
Special proteins for contractions
Can store glycogen, which can be broken down into glucose for respiration.
Job of a root hair cell?
To take up water and nutrients
Features of a root hair cell?
large surface area for greater absorption of water and mineral ions,
large permanent vacuole, which help speed up osmosis
mitochondria, release energy for the active transport of mineral ions
The job of the xylem?
Responsible for the movement of water and mineral ions up from the roots through the rest of the plant.
Features of the xylem?
Long, hollow tubes for easy movement of water and mineral ions.
Spirals of lignin, which strengthens the cell and supports the plant.
Job of the phloem?
moves dissolve foods up and down the plant.
Features of the phloem?
cell walls have become sieve plates to allow dissolved food to move easily
companion cells, have lots of mitochondria to release energy for the movement of food.
