Diffusion, Osmosis and Active transport Flashcards
What is diffusion?
A passive process (doesn’t need energy)
The spreading out of particles in any substance in solution or a gas from an area of high to low concentration
(down a concentration gradient)
Factors that effect the rate of diffusion?
A higher temperature causes particles to move quicker, which speeds up diffusion
The greater the difference in concentration, the faster diffusion will occur
The bigger the surface area, the quicker, the rate of diffusion
What is osmosis?
It is passive (doesn’t need energy)
The diffusion of water from a dilute solution to a more concentrated solution through a partially permeable membrane. (down a concentration gradient)
What is active transport
Requires energy
move substances from a dilute solution to a more concentrated solution to a partially permeable membrane. (against the gradient)
