Communicable disease Flashcards
What is a communicable disease?
Infectious diseases. A disease that can be transmitted from one organism to another.
How are communicable disease spread?
Direct contact- when the infected individual directly touches a healthy individual
water- pathogens spread in the water than affect the individual when they drink it
Air- pathogens spread in the air and cause droplet infection when another individual breathes in the infected air.

What are pathogens?
microorganisms that cause disease
Bacteria
larger than viruses some are good, they reproduce rapidly and can produce poisons called toxins, which damage tissues
Viruses
very small live inside the body cells they also reproduce rapidly but require the hosts body cells to do this. They damage and eventually destroy the host cells by bursting out of the cells and infecting more cells
4 ways to reduce communicable disease
Simple hygiene measures
Destroying vectors
Isolating infected individuals
Vaccines
