it is an exothermic reaction when energy is transferred to the environment. It supplies the energy needed for movement keeping warm and carrying out chemical reactions.

respiration in the presence of oxygen happens in the mitochondria

respiration in the absence of oxygen can happen in our bodies when muscles work very hard. Less energy is transferred
