Solid Structures (3) Flashcards
Face-Centered Cubic (FCC)
Composed of 14 atoms, with one entered on each face
Body-Centered Cubic (BCC)
Composed of 9 atoms, with one entered in the middle
Hexagonal Closed-Packed (HCP)
Composed of 15 atoms, with three in then middle row
Phase
A form of material possessing a single characteristic structure and associated characteristic properties.
- Solid or liquid
- Pure substance or solution
Substitutional Solid solution
where two or more different types of atoms fill a regular atom site within a lattice.
Interstitual Solid Solution
Where solute atoms are found not in the regular lattice positions.
Dendrites
Crystal growth produces a Crystalline solid that has closely packed atoms in fixed positions relative to each other.
- Dendrites become Grains
Grain Structure
Grains + Grain Boundary.
Grains have a uniform Lattice structure, when the meet one another they form a grain boundary which is non-uniform and squished atoms.
- Grain are 3-10 atoms wide
- Coarse Grains
- Fine Grains
