Expendable Molds (5) Flashcards
Green Mold
“Sandcastle Sand”
- Mixture of silica, sand, clay and water
- Moldable sand
Dry Sand Casting
Originally made from Green Sand, modified for dry properties and cooked in an oven.
- More susceptible to Hot-Tears than the Green Sand Mold
Shell Mold Casting
Made by covering a heated machined metal pattern with sand that is mixed with with small particles of Thermosetting Plastic. The Mold is baked and hardened to accommodate the molten pour.
Investment Casting
(Precision Casting/Lost Wax process) The Pattern is made of wax and is dipped and encased in a refractory slurry of Ceramic particles. The Mold is heated, melting the wax and leaving the Casting.
Plaster Mold
Made of plaster of Paris with additives such as; talc, silica flour, sand
- High dimensional accuracy
- Only cast Non-Ferrous materials
