Four Steps
- Making a Pattern
- Building a Mold
- Filling the Mold
- Removing the Casting
Pattern
Identical to the final product. Used to create a Mold cavity.
Reusable Patterns
- Made of Metal, Wood, Plastic
- Patterns removed from Sand-Castings
Expendable Patterns
- Made of wax, foam, plastic resin
- For intricate designs
- Dimensional Accuracy
- Pattern is melted away In a furnace or by molten metal
Molds
Made with a Pattern, intended to hold the molten metal in the intended solidified shape.
Reusable Molds
- Usually made of metal
- Reusable
Expendable Molds
- Mold must be broken to remove the Casting
Cheek
Flask inserted between the Cope and Drag to help mold difficult shapes.
Core
Separate piece inserted in the mold cavity to form an opening in the casting.
Chaplets
Small metal pieces used to hold the Core in place
Cope
Top portion of the mold
Drag
Bottom portion of the mold
Gates
Where molten metal from the riser feeds into the Mold Cavity.
Pouring Cup
Where molten metal is poured into the Mold
