Material grouping - Non-Metals (2) Flashcards
Polymers
Solids that have many non-metallic petroleum-based molecules chemically bonded together in chains and links.
Thermoplastics
Linear structures
- Soften and melt with heat
- Solid when cooled
- reheat/remold-able
- Less brittle and soluble
Thermosetting plastics
Structural three dimensional link
- Solid and hard with heat, chemical reaction, electron beam
- Not reheat/re-moldable
- More brittle and not soluble
Elastomers (rubber)
Can be elastically deformed when a force or strain is applied but revert back to their original shape when the force or strain is removed.
Ceramics
Typically Crystalline in nature and are Compounds formed between Metallic and Non-Metallic elements.
- Heavy and dense/lightweight
- Strong and hard yet brittle
- Conductor/insulator
- Some have magnetic properties
- High-temperature resistance
Composites
Composed of at least two elements to produce properties that are different than the elements have on their own.
Three groups
- Polymer Matrix Composites
- Metal Matrix Composites
- Ceramic Matrix Composites
Matrix
Bulk of Composite material
Reinforcement
Non-Bulk material in Composites (fibre form)
Laminantes
Strength from layers. Layered in alternating Grain, and glued/bonded together.
- Used in the aircraft industry
- Graphite sheets + honeycomb shaped epoxy
