In Service Material Effects (10) Flashcards
Cyclic Loading
Repeated or fluctuated stresses below the tensile strength
- Application is on areas of pre-existing localized stress and fatigue and initiate Fatigue Cracking
Cyclic Loading
That application of additional stress on a repeated basis that will cause the dislocation of atoms at the point of stress.
- Stress loading can be above or below the elastic limit
- Sharp edges, notches, keyways etc
- from tearing, grinding, cracks, laps, pits
Cyclic Loading
That application of additional stress on a repeated basis that will cause the dislocation of atoms at the point of stress.
- Stress loading can be above or below the elastic limit
Constant Static Loading
Steady load that is applied to a material or structure that does not fluctuate.
Overstress
Load that exceeds the ultimate strength of a material applied in a single application causing sudden catastrophic failure.
The Environmental Effects
Weather even ultraviolet sunlight can have detrimental effects
The Environmental Effects
Weather even ultraviolet sunlight can have detremental effects
Operational Wear
The application of cyclic or static loading working in concert or independently depending on movement of parts during operation that causes sudden material degradation.
- Abrasion, Erosion, Friction
Corrosion
Deterioration of metals by a chemical reaction.
- Liquid, Gas or combination
Caused by
- Direct chemical action
- Electrochemical action
Mediums: water, brine, acids, alkaline, caustic fumes, bacteria (exotic)
