Soft tissue - Public Health Flashcards
Non-communicable disease (NCD) cause 89% of all detahs in the uk. Name 4 modifiable risk factors of NCDs
- Diet
- Smoking
- Drinking
- Physical activity
What are the health benefits of physical activity?
Reduces risk of:
- Dementia
- Hip fractures
- Depression
- Breast cancer
- Colon cancer
- Type 2 diabetes
- CVD
- All cause mortality
How often should children engage in physical activity?
60 mins daily
How often should adults engage in physical activity?
150 mins weekly of at least moderate intensity activity
Discuss how often adults should engage in physical acitivty
- 150 mins weekly of at least moderate intensity activity
- At least two days should be used for activities that’ll improve muscle strength
- Older adults at risk of falls should incorporate physical activity to improve balnce and coordination on at least two days
According to WHO, what does moderate intensity activity require?
Requires a moderate amount of effort and noticeably accelerate the hear rate
According to WHO what does vigorous intensity activity require?
Requires a large amount of effort and causes rapid breathing and substantial increase in heart rate
Descrbe the talk test in moderate intensity activity and vigorous intensity activity
- If you are doing moderate intensity activity, you can usually talk, but not sing during the activity
- If you are doing vigorous intensity activity, you won’t be able to say no more than a few words without pausing for a breath
Describe sedentary behaviour
- Any waking behaviour where sitting or lying is the dominant mode or posture
- Energy expenditure is very low
- Screen-time - 7 hours a day is generally classed as high sedentary time
Why is healthcare an important sector for physical activity promotion?
- Large population read
- Trusted source of advice
- Primary and secondary prevention
What is the global action plan on physicl activity? Give 2 examples of actions in the plan
- An initiative developed by the WHO to increase activity
- Action 1.4- pre-and-in-service training
- Action 3.2 = patient assessment and councelling
Describe the 5 A’s use to assess and councel patiens on physical acitivity
- Assess- physical activity of the patient
- Advise - on benefits of being active and how active we need to be
- Agree - on action plan with achievable goals
- Assit - e.g., discussing how to overcome barriers, providing them with written information or signposting them to local opportunties such as walking groups
- Arrange - follow up for further support and monitor progress
