- Epilepsy - 1st line for generalised epilepsies
* Mania (mood stabiliser)

GABAa effects and sodium channel blocker

What are the common adverse reactions of Sodium Valproate?
A
- Liver failure
- Pancreatitis
- Lethargy
- Tiredness/drowsiness
- Nausea and vomiting
- Mood changes
- Osteoporosis

What are the common drug-drug interactions of Sodium Valproate?
A
- It’s a CYP inhibitor - so can increase the plasma conc of some drugs e.g. other AEDs
- Patients on AEDs and warfarin will need close monitoring (valproate is an inhibitor or CYP450s that metabolise warfarin)
