Salbutamol Flashcards
1
Q
What class is Salbutamol?
A
A short acting, fast beta-2 agonist
2
Q
What are the common indications for Salbutamol
A
- For short term, fast symptom relief of asthma
* To prevent bronchoconstriction prior to exercise
3
Q
What is the mechanism of action of Salbutamol?
A
Reverses bronchoconstriction (via beta-2 receptors in airway smooth muscle) Also increases mucus clearance by cilia action
Beta-2 agonist binds, AC activated, increased cAMP, increased PKA activation, bronchial smooth muscle relaxation
If used to regularly, effects of drug could decrease
4
Q
What are the common adverse reactions of Salbutamol?
A
- Adrenergic symptoms - tachycardia, palpitations, anxiety and tremor
- Increased glycogenolysis
- Increased renin release
- SVT risk (due to increase SAN activity so increased HR and decreased refractory period at AVN)
5
Q
What are the common drug-drug interactions of Salbutamol?
A
- Beta-blockers - reduces effects of beta-2 agonists
