Q

What is the mechanism of action of Salbutamol?

A
Reverses bronchoconstriction (via beta-2 receptors in airway smooth muscle)
Also increases mucus clearance by cilia action

Beta-2 agonist binds, AC activated, increased cAMP, increased PKA activation, bronchial smooth muscle relaxation

If used to regularly, effects of drug could decrease

Q

What are the common adverse reactions of Salbutamol?

A
  • Adrenergic symptoms - tachycardia, palpitations, anxiety and tremor
  • Increased glycogenolysis
  • Increased renin release
  • SVT risk (due to increase SAN activity so increased HR and decreased refractory period at AVN)
