An opioid - strong agonist

What are the common indications for Morphine?
A
- Analgesia of severe acute pain
+ in palliative care

What is the mechanism of action of Morphine?
A
Binds to the Mu receptor, a GPCR (has a strong affinity) and completely activates the receptor

What are the common adverse reactions of Morphine?
A
- Respiratory Depression
- Emesis
- Constipation (reduced gut motility and increased sphincter tone)
- CVS side effects
- Miosis (pupil contraction)
- histamine release via mast cell activation (so caution in asthmatics)

What are the common drug-drug interactions of Morphine?
A
No specific interactions
but caution with other sedative drugs e.g. tricyclic antidepressants
