  • Starts by identifying a risky behaviour in a majority population
  • Own heavy drinking ability based on peers
  • The aim is to communicate with these strategies to a target population which concerns the actual norm concerning these behaviours.
  • These behaviours can be shown through the media, and promotional material
  • By advertising these actual norms, researchers will hope the behaviour will be moderated to bring it in line with their own peers.

A

Attempt to correct misperceptions of normative behaviour of other in an attempt to challenge risky behaviour of a target population. DeJong tested the effectiveness of these norms on marketing campaigns, to drive alcohol abuse down, across 14 college sites. Students in the social norms condition did not report lower self-reported alcohol consumption as a result of the campaign.
